Create Assessments

An assessment includes evaluation procedures that serve to determine and assess the progress and performance of learners in an online course or similar instructional setting (e.g., training).

With just a few clicks, you can create a customized and meaningful assessment in this content tool. Each assessment is based on specific questions or tasks that need to be completed.

You can either create new questions specifically for your assessment (1) or reuse existing questions from an existing course (2).

The questions for your assessment must be integrated into a content unit. It’s sufficient to create a new content unit in which only the Exercise Phase section is activated.

Assign to this Exercise Phase the questions or exercises you want to use in your assessment.

In the following example, all exercises from the course First Aid should be assigned to the Exercise Phase. Depending on the naming, it may be difficult to locate all exercises from the course.

Simply enter the course name in the Search field. In the search options, select the corresponding Filter by Course entry.

Check the checkboxes of the desired exercises and save your selection.

Return to the section overview and publish the content unit.

The published content unit, with the filled Exercise Phase, must then be integrated into a course.

To do this, create a new course. Make sure to activate the Usable in Assessments toggle.

Assign to the newly created course the content unit that contains the exercises for your assessment.

Don’t forget to publish the course.

For learners to access the assessment, you need to add it to a group and invite learners to the group.

You can either create a new group or use an existing one.

To create an assessment in an existing group:

  1. Click the desired group.

  2. Click the ASSESSMENTS section.

  3. Click the CREATE ASSESSMENT button.

  4. Enter the assessment title in the Name field.

  5. Make sure the Activated toggle is switched on.

The configuration options for the process and properties of an assessment are extensive and grouped into: Time, Presets, Questions, Evaluation, Other Settings, Custom Notifications, and Actions.

By enabling a toggle, you can activate a specific option. Each option is well-described, making it easy to set up your custom assessment.

Commonly used options include:

In the Time section, you can define how long the learner has to complete the assessment.

In the Questions section, you can set how the available questions are displayed. Shuffle questions is an option that is enabled by default.

Of course, every learner wants to know how well they performed. To do this, activate the toggle Show evaluation at the end of the assessment in the Evaluation section.

In the Minimum score field, you can define in percent from when the assessment is considered passed. As a reward, the learner receives a certificate. If learners should be able to download the certificate themselves, you can also enable this in the Evaluation section.

Note

You can also provide your own custom certificate template. Learn more in the section Custom Certificates.

A learner can only take an assessment once. If there are no time restrictions, the assessment can be paused and resumed later.

Especially for mandatory trainings, it may be necessary for assessments to be repeated annually. Sometimes, new employees may not yet have completed the required trainings.

In the Actions section, you’ll find the COPY ASSESSMENT button. This lets you reuse the copied assessment next year or provide it to new employees.

Once you’ve made all desired settings, confirm them by clicking the SAVE button.

After configuring your assessment, you must now define its content.

The content is the course that contains the content unit with the assessment questions.

To assign the content:

  1. If needed, open the desired assessment in the Assessments view.

  2. Click the CONTENT section.

  3. Click the MANAGE CONTENT button.

  4. Select the checkbox of the desired course.

  5. Click the SAVE button and then CONFIRM in the pop-up window.

Your assessment is now ready and will appear in the Assessments section.

This guide explained how to create an assessment from a course’s existing questions.

If you want learners to be able to view the course content before each question, you can define an existing course as the content for the assessment.

To do this, don’t select the course with just the single content unit and Exercise Phase—rather, check the box for the entire course.

Your assessment is almost ready. Now you just need to invite the learners.

Note

By default, all group members are automatically invited to the assessment. If you want only specific group members to participate, deactivate the Automatic assignment of participants setting.

To invite participants:

  1. If necessary, open the assessment.

  2. Click the PARTICIPANTS section.

  3. Click the MANAGE PARTICIPANTS button.

  4. Check the boxes of those group members who should participate in the assessment.

  5. Click the SAVE button.

When a participant logs in to their account, they will see the assessment and can begin it.
